Proposed Prize Mission:

Investigations are currently being conducted in the formal and informal learning landscape from early learning to higher education. Likely a series of X PRIZEs, we are exploring a new generation of learning tools that hold the promise of delivering dynamic educational experiences customized to meet the unique needs of each student and enabling schools to personalize education.


Some current ideas include:

  • Adaptive digital content that, like computer games, continuously assess skill and interest and customize delivery.
  • Powerful learning platforms, both proprietary and open source, to enable smart educational systems and a new generation of hybrid schools.

    • Given the power of technology today, all young people should have access to engaging customized learning. They should experience success individually and as members of a team, have the opportunity to become an expert, and to be around adults they can imagine themselves becoming. Competitions like FIRST Robotics are a great example of a powerful learning experience—imagine if that was combined with a powerful adaptive digital learning platform.

    We’re contemplating several prize formats including:

  • Learning technologies: software and platform trials for products/services that dramatically accelerate learning and expand access.
  • City competitions: mobilizing new resources and methods to improve early learning or college/work readiness.

    • Sponsor & Benefactor Opportunities:

  • 500K Final Prize Development Grant: Work with the Foundation to finish the research phase and crystallize the final prize details.
  • $15 million Title Sponsor: Assist the X PRIZE team with final stage development and receive global recognition as an education innovator.
  • $2.5 million Benefactor Opportunity: Join the X PRIZE Vision Circle and sponsor educational outreach activities Foundation-wide including the X PRIZE Lab@MIT.
